MAHOMET TO NAME DAVID SMYSOR AS ITS NEXT CHIEF OF POLICE
(MAHOMET, Ill, - - July 22, 2025) Village of Mahomet will name David Smysor as its next Chief of Police at a special board of trustees meeting on August 12, 2025, effective October 1, 2025. Smysor will replace the outgoing chief, Mike Metzler, who is retiring September 30, 2025.
Smysor currently serves as Deputy Chief of Police for the City of Urbana Police Department where he is responsible for strategic oversight of departmental operations including oversight of the patrol, investigations, and administration divisions. He has been a law enforcement officer for 24 years, all with the City of Urbana Police Department where he began as a patrol officer in 2001. From 2007 to 2017 he served as Adult Felony Detective, then Patrol Sergeant from 2017 to 2019, Detective Sergeant and Criminal Investigation Lieutenant from 2019 to 2022, and Patrol Division Lieutenant from 2022 to 2024.
Smysor, a resident of Mahomet, Illinois, holds a Bachelor of Science in Law Enforcement and Justice Administration from Western Illinois University. He is a graduate of the 291st Session of the FBI National Academy and graduate of Police Staff and Command from Northwestern University. He is also a veteran of the Illinois National Guard where he served from 1997-2005. He is a member of several professional associations including FBI National Academy Associates, International Association of Chiefs of Police, and the Illinois Association of Chiefs of Police.
Smysor believes his deep-rooted connection to the community and his wealth of operational and leadership experience has prepared him well to be the next chief in Mahomet. “My past experiences in law enforcement have provide me with a strong foundation in community-focused policing, crisis leadership, personnel development, and strategic planning,” said Smysor. “I understand the values and expectations of Mahomet’s residents, and I am honored to help lead and serve in a way that reinforces trust, accountability, and collaboration between the police department and the community.”
Village President Jason Tompkins is thrilled to welcome Smysor as the new chief of the Mahomet Police Department. “With a proven career in law enforcement spanning more than two decades, Dave brings a wealth of experience and strong leadership,” said Tompkins. “I am confident under his guidance; the department will continue to uphold its tradition of excellence and reach even greater heights.”
Village Administrator Patrick Brown is excited to bring in a leader with twenty-four years of experience in so many areas of law enforcement. “Dave’s experience in patrol and investigations and later leading those divisions as a lieutenant and deputy chief, will be a tremendous asset to the department,” said Brown. “When we started this process to search for new police chief, our first step was determining what criteria we were looking for in this individual,” said Brown. “We are fortunate to have found Dave who was exactly what we were looking for in a leader, in a law enforcement officer and in a person.”
Brown is confident Smysor will easily transition from a larger department like Urbana to a much smaller one like Mahomet. “Dave is well prepared to wear a lot of hats and knows how to balance the operational side and the administrative side of police work,” said Brown. “He knows the department is in a great position right now and he wants to continue to build on that foundation through communication, collaboration and steadiness.”
Tompkins believes filling the shoes of Chief Mike Metzler is no small task. “With more than forty years of service in law enforcement, including the past fourteen as chief in Mahomet, Mike has led with a steady and unwavering commitment to our community,” said Tompkins. “I am deeply grateful for his dedicated service and for his thoughtful leadership in ensuring a smooth transition. Thanks to his efforts, Mahomet is well-positioned to remain a safe and thriving community.”

All Village of Mahomet Water Customers- We have been receiving phone calls from residents that they have not received their water bills. All bills were mailed out on July 2nd and are due on July 20th, if you have not received your bill, please contact us at 217-586-4456 to obtain a copy.
The Public Works Department will be spraying the joints and cracks along the Main Street between Lincoln and Lombard Streets from July 16-18th (weather permitting).
