Village of Mahomet Ends Discussions with Clean Cloud Energy Regarding Potential Data Center Project Near Mahomet

(MAHOMET, Ill, - - October 5, 2026) Following discussions with Clean Cloud Energy and careful consideration of public feedback, the Village of Mahomet will no longer pursue opportunities with the company regarding a potential data center project. The questions and concerns shared by residents played a significant role in informing this decision.

“Our responsibility is to carefully evaluate potential developments and determine whether there is a path forward that serves Mahomet’s interests,” said Mayor Jason S. Tompkins. “Listening to our residents is an essential part of that responsibility. Their feedback and overwhelming opposition helped shape our evaluation and contributed significantly to the decision not to move forward with Clean Cloud Energy on this project.”

Tompkins also expressed his full support for Village staff and their work throughout the evaluation process.

“Our staff has my full support and confidence,” Tompkins said. “They undertook the difficult and necessary work of gathering information, asking questions, and evaluating what a project of this scale could mean for our community. I appreciate their professionalism, diligence, and commitment to Mahomet. Exploring an opportunity is part of that responsibility, and that process can also lead to a decision not to proceed.”

This decision does not diminish the Village’s commitment to attracting commercial development and expanding its commercial tax base for the benefit of the Village and other local taxing bodies. The Village will continue pursuing development opportunities that align with the community’s priorities and long-term interests. Feedback from residents helped inform the Village’s conclusion that data centers do not align with those priorities.

The Village thanks residents for sharing their perspectives and participating in this discussion. Protecting the Mahomet Aquifer and the community’s long-term interests remains paramount as the Village considers future development opportunities.
